You’re exhausted, yet you keep waking up in the middle of night to stare at the blank ceiling. One hour. . .two hours… “Ughhh. . .Why can’t I sleep?” Then, just as it’s time to get up, you lie there thinking, “What’s the point?” You finally manage to get out of bed. . .maybe. . .but it’s difficult to get things done. It’s hard to keep your focus. Things just feel blah, as you want to reach for that joy. . .that excitement that you know must be out there. . .but the motivation. . .the laughter…the connection with others all just feel out of reach.
That crushing, pressing, overwhelming feeling of “I just don’t care!” stays with you, even with activities and loved ones that you used to enjoy. Hopeless. . .helpless. . .feeling guilty that you can’t figure out how to get loose from this, but sad or angry that there’s no one that understands enough to pull you through the tunnel.
If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Depression is currently the number one disability for women. The World Health Organization estimates that 340 million people currently suffer from depression and that by 2020 it will rank second among the most serious health conditions.
Now, depression is often confused with more temporary frustrations: challenges with your mate, the loss of a loved one, disappointment with not getting a job. However, while these times of natural and expected emotional states are more transient–lasting days or weeks–depression lingers on for months or even years.
Depression has many levels and has even more faces. A long-lasting low mood can quickly become chronic and entrenched. Depression has a way of spiraling into an even deeper depression.
The thing is . . . even the most severe levels of depression are absolutely treatable. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, and Talk Therapy among other therapies have all been successful in stopping depression in its tracks.
I can guide you through the fog and toward new ways of thinking while finding the crux of the problem and defusing the emotional power it has. We will also work on changing the debilitating somatic feelings you are experiencing and will design a future that fits with your personal goals and values.
